How Often Should I Buy New Running Shoes?

running shoesPeople often wonder how often they should replace their running shoes and the easy answer is more often that you think. I have been running in this pair of shoes for a total of 7 months and 365 miles. Even seven months is a long time to have one shoe but I do alternate them with a second pair of shoes I purchased 4 months ago. By looking at the picture you would think that they are almost new, but that may also be due to the fact that training in Las Vegas means there are not many wet and muddy training days.

The typical running shoe should last you approximately 400 miles. If you are training for a marathon a five month training schedule may have you doing as many as 550 miles so you are going to need more than one pair. A good idea is to alternate between 2 pair of training shoes or buy a second pair about 2 months before the race and use that pair on race day.

Some shoes will last longer if they have a large amount of stability or motion control built into the shoe. Running shoes can also be worn out in less than 400 miles if you are a heavy runner or have a shoe with lots of cushioning. Generally speaking, the softer and lighter the running shoe the less miles you can go before they need replacing. However, you should buy running shoes based on the needs of your running style and not just how long they will last. Just remember to track your milage and replace them to help prevent pains and injuries.

My old running shoes still work great for play and walking.
